?What to do before a laser operation

• You should know that “What is the aim of the treatment?”
• You should be within the age limit; best age is from 18 years to 40 years.
• If you are determined then set the treatment as your first priority as it is a costly procedure and you will have to manage for the cost!
• A detailed examination should be performed before operation
  • To identify the potential for damage or the risk factors.
  • Some patients may need some pretreatments like some retinal laser or some lid infection may need to be treated.
• It is best to use antibiotic drops for 1-2 days before treatment to prevent post-operative infection.

?What to expect after operation

• The operation time is few minutes; during which the patient does not have any problems. The patients usually are busy in talking to the doctor during the procedure. Only drops are used for anesthesia, no injections are used.
• Be ready for some discomfort. Immediately after the operation patient is alright, but after some time you may feel irritation and watering. Many people also feel difficulty with light.
• Be ready for some blurriness after the operation which usually fades after about 8 hours. The second day is usually the equivalent of no blurring.
• Be ready for reading difficulty in the early postoperative days. Improvement of vision usually occurs within the first few days, but this process lasts for three months. Especially those with higher numbers. Actually there is an inflammation of the cornea. As the inflammation gets better, the discomfort gets better.
• It is difficult to return to work for the first two days after which you can return to work.

• This treatment is very useful in otherwise healthy eye, especially when the number of glasses is small. The treatment results are excellent.
• However, if there is a high number of glassess, such as 16.0- or 17.0- etc., then it is dangerous so alternative methods should be adopted instead of laser.
• If someone already has some disease in the eyes which cannot be cured permanently, then there may be disadvantages, for example.
  • A chronic coronary disease, especially corneal congestion.
  • Keratoconus. As in this case, the central part of the cornea is already thin that can be further thinned by laser application.
  • If there is persistent inflammation in the cornea.
  • Corneal opacity that affects the transparency of the cornea and does not appear to be completely corrected but may be beneficial in some corneal dystrophies.

?Is this method dangerous

The fact that this treatment is simple and safe is not expensive because it is dangerous, but because its machines and other accessories are very expensive, but less expensive, especially for Epi-LASIK.

As the cornea plays major role in focusing the light rays entering into the eye, so by altering the curvature of cornea we can alter the refractive state of the eye. This is the basic technique which is used in this operation. The curvature of the corneal surface is altered with computerized calculations and then with application of laser. Thus after operation one can see clearly just like when wearing glasses. This is described in the following images.

Is there any other way to get rid of glasses?

• If you are thinking about some exercises of some drugs then the bitter fact is that there no such treatment. There is vast research going on throughout the world but yet no success. Many alternative medical physicians have claims but nothing could be proved till now. At the level of double blind study everything fails.
• There is a very limited number of people who have have weakness of vision due to some temporary reasons for example high levels of blood glucose, corneal edema, limbal conjunctivitis, keratitis. These patient get benefit from medical treatment. These drugs can be of any discipline.
• My practice is now in 4th decade. In this long medical journey I have never seen a who has really been treated and gotten rid of glasses. Many people have come to me claiming I have been treated and now I don’t have weakness of vison. But the person is examine by vison chart and computer, the defect persists without any change. There is a psychological and symptomatic improvement.
• The only way is to make structural change which can be manipulated by many methods such as following:
  • Excimer laser
  • Phaco operation
  • Intacts
  • Phakic IOLs
• The most beneficial and used word wide is laser.
