There are two types of lenses which are implated after removal of cataract:
- Foldable IOL
- Non-foldable IOL
NonFoldable lens
These lenses are made up of hard material. A large incision is made to insert them. Most are now becoming obsolete. As the incision is very large so the wound is closed by stitches.
Foldable IOL lens
These are lenses made of soft material. They can be easily folded so a small incision is made in the eye. This lens is inserted into the eye through this small passage by an injector. Once inside, they open up and enlarge again. Following are different types of foldable lenses:
PMMA Lenses are hard and cannot be folded. In the past these were implanted everwhere but now they are used on when cheaper operations are intended.
Foldable lenses have PMMA lenses especially aspheric type, which greatly improve the quality of vision and many of the difficulties faced by intelligent people are not encountered now. All modern lenses are aspheric.
Toric IOLs: Most of the patients usually have to use cylinder number spectacles after the operation. Toric lenses can be completely correct the distant vision after operation,
Multifocal IOLs: Really these lenses are a great blessing for humanity. With multifocal lense patients become able to see both near and far without glasses. Otherwise after operation patients have to usie reading glasses.Newer, lenses also improve the intermediate vision. The invention of multifocal lenses has led to the fact that one can get rid of spectacles even in old age. One of the most important problem is both eyes must be operated. Only single eye operation often disturbs.
